Melges The Wizard of Zenda https://www.wizardofzenda.com/ A documentary film exploring the legendary career of Buddy Melges. Don’t miss this unique pre-release screening opportunity Doors and Bar open at 6:30pm October 28 Open to Members and their Guests, $15/person - $5 of every ticket donated to the Community Boating Program! You’ll hear from fellow world class sailors and competitors, like America’s Cup champion and former ESPN sailing analyst Gary Jobson*; three-time champion Dennis Conner, the sailor they call ‘Mr. America’s Cup’; John Bertrand, the Australian skipper who shocked the world by breaking the 132-year U.S. winning streak; and Bill Koch, the billionaire yachtsman who partnered with Buddy to chase the cup in 1992. This feature length documentary takes you beyond the headlines to explore Buddy’s extraordinary life. With interviews, archival film footage and video gathered across five decades, you’ll learn about a sailor from a working-class family in southern Wisconsin who built a resume of winning that made him one of the greatest sailors of all time. Whether art or science, Buddy was a fierce competitor who shared what he learned with anyone willing to take the time to ask. His legendary career seems almost mystical, and earned him the well-deserved nickname: The Wizard of Zenda. Scroll all the way down to RSVP It's always great to see kids come up through our club's junior sailing programs and then go on to careers in the maritime industry. What's even better is when our amateur beer brewer contestants from years past go on to form a local brewery! Years ago, we hosted a contest for local amateur brewers to compete for best beer at our Octoberfest celebration. One year, it was so hard to decide a winner because we had two great beers. Lucky for us, they had a great time, joined forces, started Minister Brewing, and are coming back for this year's Octoberfest! We'll have a special keg of their beer and Dave Amoroso will give a talk about a surprising maritime beer connection! In addition to the beer, we'll have great member prepared food Terrill will be making hot German Potato Salad, Phyllis will be making Rotkohl (spiced red cabbage), Paul K will be making Schweinebraten (roast pork in mustard sauce), Shirley will be making a vegetarian version, and we're hoping to get a volunteer for a Bavarian dessert (Kaiserschmarrn anyone?-) So put on your best lederhosen or dirndl dress and come on down to the club this Friday October 20 at 6:00PM for great food, beer, talk, fellowship, and now with some great accordion music to take you to Bavaria! The best part is - dinner, talk, and music is only $20! Come join me to hear all about my Alaska adventure - what I saw and what I learned - a lot of both!
Please bring a pot luck dish to share (much preferred - I want to taste your yummy cooking!-) or you can pay $10 at the door. In addition to my talk on Friday night, we are partnered with CBP to make a great stop on the city's "Day of Play" tour. We'll be manning a snack table in the clubhouse for the families that stop by.
