April 4, 2024 at 6:30PM This approximately 90-minute introductory presentation will give radar users a practical assist to get underway using your radar, including controls and operation, limitations of radar, its use in navigation and piloting, and underway with an intro to collision avoidance. Essential navigation rules related to radar are emphasized, with ample time for Q&A. The presentation will be of benefit to both power and sail cruisers and will address radar and general related issues common to all manufacturers’ products. If you’re thinking about buying a radar, this fundamental info may help your decision process.
Our presenter, Larry Brandt, has for many years been chief radar instructor at the Starpath School of Navigation. He is a former professional aviator and is a certified American Sailing Association instructor for all levels up to Advanced Coastal Cruising, Navigation and Weather. We've always been told to "Beware the Ides of March!" This year, on the Ides of March, the only thing you should beware of is missing our great Irish pot lock dinner. Our trusty Commodore Chris has volunteered to cook enough traditional corned beef and cabbage for everyone to have some. All you have to do is bring a pot luck side dish or dessert! No Problem - just pay $10 at the door that opens at 6PM!-) In addition to all the great food, we will be treated to two speakers: Tom Beard, retired Coast Guard Lieutenant Commander, sailed around the world twice, editor of the book, The Coast Guard, and boat designer and builder will be talking about the attack on the PA Coast Guard base (shown above) during World War II. Sudie Mason, will be telling about how her cat saved their lives on the fishing boat. Join us for a Kon-Tiki Happy Hour this Friday! Last week, the PAYC book club had a great discussion about Thor Heyerdahl's amazing expedition to verify his theories about the historic voyage of a man named Kon-Tiki. Not only was the voyage riveting, everything that happened before they set sail was an adventure in it's own right!
So, we decided to share the adventure with all of our fellow club members - without all that pesky reading. We're going to watch the movies!!!!-) Here's the plan for this Friday, February 23. 5:30PM - Doors open - get your drinks, snacks, and popcorn 6:30PM - We watch the Kon-Tiki documentary 7:30PM - Watch the film adaptation No RSVP necessary Please bring a snack to share and remember that this is for club members and invited guests only - it is not open to the public! Get a little bit of tropical paradise in the middle of winter! Thanks to our way cool Vice-Commodore Karen O'Donnell, we get to have a Hawaiian luau dinner this Friday! Dakindz Hawaiian Island Grill has graciously offered to serve us a great Island dinner with all the sides, play Hawaiian music, and put leis around your neck as you arrive - all for only $25!!! Available entrees are: Kahlua Pork, BBQ Chicken, Mixed plate of both, Poke Bowl - cold raw fish - sushi, or a Vegetarian option.
